Nodland Cellars

Our philosophy at Nodland Cellars is to combine the disciplines of art, music and wine into a blend that engages all the senses of the body. Wine is not a commodity; it is liquid art, beautiful to the eye, pleasant to the nose, it delights the senses as it enters the mouth and becomes one with us as our body assimilates it into muscle and the mind brings with it an experience that enhances the soul. Wine-making is an art and the most original works are created by artists.

We employ the traditional methods of wine-making that have been used centuries before the scientific method was devised, from the time when the wines were each unique works of art.

Nodland Cellars

Next week, we release the new 2016 Lewis Vineyard Syrah. Only 50 cases made. Here are tasting notes:

The wine is youthful, and powerful. The flavors are concentrated with a nice balance of oak and fruit. The alcohols are big, but so are the flavors. It has been vinified for longevity.

Lewis Vineyard has a reputation for growing Washington States darker, peppery and more austere versions of Syrah and this wine reinforces that reputation, with one important difference – this textured, complex Syrah is more reminiscent of the grape’s forebears from France’s Northern Rhone Valley than of its peers in Washington State. This thick garnet wine opens with complex aromatics redolent of dried rosemary, black & green olive tapenade, dark cocoa, and mild cedar with refreshing black and red cherry fruit impressions.

On the palate, the wine will remain fresh for a decade with vibrant herbs, smoky dried meats, lively, candied blackberry, licorice, concentrated cranberry and pomegranate. Mild, firm tannins define the medium length finish. It will remain a great companion for dinner for years beyond its first decade.

For the near term, it displays the texture for heartier foods. Oak aging is subtle, balanced against big fruit and assertive spice impressions, more structure than flavor among the wine’s big flavors. The menu for this wine welcomes: Italian sausage, Rosemary-crusted lamb, Calabrian peppers, garlic-roasted Morels, various beef and ham charcuteries or the simplicity of well-made pizza. Its cheeses are as various as Morbier, ripe Cambozola, Havarti or deep, 2+ year aged Manchego.
